What is the Promise Fund of Florida?

The Promise Fund of Florida provides access to health care for underserved communities in South Florida. We are community-based — meaning we work within Palm Beach and Martin counties to raise funds that will be deployed locally, back into the needy communities of South Florida. Florida is ranked last of all states in government resources available for women in health care. With this knowledge, we created the Promise Fund of Florida: Women of diversity are dying at an alarming rate.

How does your agency benefit the community?

We have a proven model that works. Navigators, to be selected and trained by the professionals at Susan G. Komen, MorseLife and other selected organizations, will live within each community. We will improve outcomes through patient navigation to hospitals and care providers in South Florida. The Quantum Foundation has given a three-year commitment to measure outcomes.

What is your agency’s focus for the future?

The Promise Fund of Florida has the goal of raising $5 million by the end of 2021. Our program is unique as we fund and place health navigators in the community, partnering traditional health services with community assets. We have our first navigator in place funded through Susan G. Komen. We are hiring culturally competent navigators to implement programs providing education, training and connecting community assets with those in need. Research shows that navigation patients have significantly better health outcomes and survival rates.

In collaboration with our partners, we expect to see increased knowledge of breast and cervical health, women accessing diagnosis earlier through early detection services, as well as positive health outcomes of women in the program. The goal of the navigation program is to increase earlier stages of detection of cancer where treatment outcomes are much more favorable, since women of color and asset-limited households are at greater risk for late stage cancers. We gain trust through navigators.

How can the community help?

The Promise Fund encourages the community to join efforts in our leadership. The public can donate online and attend events such as the Perfect Pink Party on Jan. 12 at The Beach Club in Palm Beach to help us reach our goal of raising $5 million. Proceeds from the event will address the needs and challenges left by the devastating storms and women’s health care system so that we can provide services to those with breast cancer.
